When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India

Prof. Subrata K. Mitra, V. B. Singh, "When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India"
Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd 2009 | ISBN-10: 8178299453 | 344 Pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

When Rebels become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India, explores the agency of ordinary men and women in the making of democratic social change in India. The study is specific to India, but the issues are of general interest, particularly for the comparative politics of democratic social change.

In contrast to the majority of post-colonial states, India has achieved both democracy and social change. The authors focus on the political skills of India's voters and their leaders, instead of the essence of Indian culture to explain this remarkable phenomenon. The study draws on public opinion data on political information, attitudes, values and participation, derived from three national surveys of the Indian electorate held in 1971, 1996 and 2004, to explain this complex theme. It specifies the two main puzzles-the instrumentality of electoral agency in the making of India's social revolution, and implications of the findings of the study for the theory of democratic social change that underpin the study. The author provides an analysis of the empirical results, a resume of the empirical findings, theoretical implications of those findings for democracy and social change, questionnaires, explanation of the research designs used in the surveys, and the method of data collection.

Electrochemistry plays a key role in a broad range of research and applied areas including the exploration of new inorganic and organic compounds, biochemical and biological systems, corrosion, energy applications involving fuel cells and solar cells, and nanoscale investigations. The Handbook of Electrochemistry serves as a source of electrochemical information, providing details of experimental considerations, representative calculations, and illustrations of the possibilities available in electrochemical experimentation.

The book is divided into five parts: Fundamentals, Laboratory Practical, Techniques, Applications, and Data. The first section covers the fundamentals of electrochemistry which are essential for everyone working in the field, presenting an overview of electrochemical conventions, terminology, fundamental equations, and electrochemical cells, experiments, literature, textbooks, and specialized books. Part 2 focuses on the different laboratory aspects of electrochemistry which is followed by a review of the various electrochemical techniques ranging from classical experiments to scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrogenerated chemiluminesence and spectroelectrochemistry. Applications of electrochemistry include electrode kinetic determinations, unique aspects of metal deposition, and electrochemistry in small places and at novel interfaces and these are detailed in Part 4. The remaining three chapters provide useful electrochemical data and information involving electrode potentials, diffusion coefficients, and methods used in measuring liquid junction potentials.

Professional XML Databases (by Kevin Williams)

"Professional XML Databases" by Kevin Williams
Publisher: Wrox | Nov 2000 | ISBN: 1861003587 | PDF | 5.55 Mb |
1005 Pages

In this book, we look at how to integrate XML into your current relational data source strategies. With the increasing amount of data stored in relational databases, and the importance of XML as a format for marking up data - whether it be for storage, display, interchange, or processing - you need to have command of four key skills: understanding how to structure, process, access, and store your data.
By introducing guidelines for how to model your XML documents in relational databases and how to model relational database information as XML, we will establish structures that enable quick and efficient access, and make our data more flexible. We then look at the developer's XML toolbox, discussing associated technologies and strategies that will help us in describing, processing, and manipulating data. We also discuss common techniques for data access, data warehousing, transmission, and marshalling and presentation, giving working examples in every chapter.
Whether you are using XML for storage, as an interchange format, or for display, this book looks at some of the key issues you should be aware of when structuring, processing, accessing, and storing your documents.
